Old School Chennai.....nah Madras Sounds Better!!!!

Everyone who has lived in Madras at the turn of the millennium would actually know what exactly I am talking about while the others may find it clueless or even think why a post like this, would pop out of nowhere.

I remember my very own last 2 years of schooling. Unlike the kids of this generation well, we did not have many such places to actually hang-out. Well we were considered pretty cool kids while at school cause we did party in the club (Glory days!) and had been to Socko (At one stage the only Disc in the city). Plus we were hanging out in Music World (believe it or not buying stuff there was considered the in-thing!) and paid an occasional visit to Quickys for some over-priced coffee. Another thing Pool and Bowling were the in thing and getting a spot to play them was considered a lucky thing!

Then the college days were there and we still visited Quickys for some over-priced coffee plus EC-41 and HFO was opened and well, I remember days when we used to party till 12 in HFO and then push off to EC-41 and party in the wee hours of the mornings. More coffee shops came about and the over-priced coffee did not seem over priced at all. Oh yeah forgot about Park Wines, a superb place in the middle of the city where one can sit and have some good cold beer and then have some good Dhabba food. Ah the good old days and you can still burn time in the city’s only mall then Spenser’s Plaza (I have ignored Alsa Mall and the rest).

Then once you start working, well though you did not have the most high-paying job in the city, you did what every other guy during that stage did, join a BPO for some little money and then burn the money on really over-priced liquor! Well did manage to hit the college scene back and once again started working but nothing much has changed. Well liquor is still insanely priced and you can’t imagine travelling on the Auto’s .

Well to me personally I find a big difference between Chennai of 2000 and the city now. Adyar was still relatively free and well though there were not that many pubs, you still can find seating in the limited options that was available. But now, well I guess finding seating in a good place especially during the weekends is next to impossible. Just visit Zara’s on a Saturday if you don’t believe me. And the traffic and the pollution has gone from worse to madness. Dont let me start up on that as it is just crazy!

Anyways the city is evolving but I still miss the Loyola days Chennai. Well, did spend some amazing time and met some great people and had some great fun! Hope some off it can be relived soon!
