The Curious Case of the Missing Poonal!

The Yajñopavītam is a thin consecrated cord, composed of distinct cotton strands, worn to symbolize coming of age. The name may be bit complicated but it comes in one color but you do have different sizes and it is popularly called as poonal atleast among the Tamil Brahmin community.

Avani Avittam or Upaakarma is the day when every Brahmin who has been officially conferred the sacred thread actually has to replace the poonal. Yes apart from replacing the poonal there are some ritualistic things associated with it and once all that process is done you get to wear a new white poonal and if you are one of those lucky ones then you get your size.

Well this year something strange happened! The day of the avani avittam, I ended up getting real late and well sort of missed the Upaakarma part but then I did manage to get my hands on a brand new poonul! This sacred thread which can empower you and actually make you a Superman type figures or atleast that is what they make you belive!

Anyways in the evening when I went for a swim and as a habit I removed it and put it on the hanger! Historically I have lost a few poonals while swimming so this time around I removed my brand new poonal and hit the pool! But once I came back it was missing!

Ok, the poonal is just a plain cotton tread and it is not something very exclusive or exotic that it is actually worth stealing! Also I did search the changing room and could not find it! 2 scenarios here, either some idiot actually wore mine by mistake & I do wonder how the hell can that happen or someone actually stole my poonal!

Apart from supernatural benefits of a poonal, there is some real time use to it like you can scratch your back with it! It is convenient! Ask any one with a poonal and he would swear by it! Very useful in this Chennai sultry weather!

Maybe I should call Sherlock and ask him to investigate this or else I should just keep my poonul in my bag! More than losing it, was the lecture from my mom about me being reckless and losing the poonul on Avani Avittam day off all the days!

I cut mine and discarded it because I don't have any sentimental value for it.
